Elizabeth Uzoma Agbanusi was born to the family of Samuel Nwoba and Elizabeth Nwabuogo Ikedilo of Isu-umuezedim village, Oba in Idemili south local government area of Anambra state on May 27, 1941. She was the first child in the family of five children; two girls and three boys. Her names were quite unique; her first name Elizabeth was a name she shared with her late mother which means consecrated to God. Uzoma means good path and then Ojiazu eme-uli which remains her title from birth as it’s a name that is hereditary means ‘’one who uses fish to thicken soup’’. This is a title given to a woman in her clan where she hailed from. Uzo lived up to her names. Uzo as she was fondly called began her education at St. Cyprian’s primary school, Port-Harcourt in 1948 and successfully completed her first school leaving certificate examination at the Holy Ghost catholic convent primary school, Enugu after putting in two years at St. Bartholomew’s C.M.S. now known as Anglican primary school, Enugu. Immediately after her primary school, she gained admission into the Holy Rosary College (HRC), a Roman Catholic mission teachers’ training school, Enugu. Though an Anglican by faith, her miraculous acceptance into such an institution built specially for Roman Catholic children and the unprecedented love both students and staff showered on her rose to a point that the white reverend sisters and mothers who ran the college wanted her to sign for the sisterhood on completion of her training. Uzo nursed the intention of becoming a reverend sister but fortunately/unfortunately, her late mother, Mrs. Elizabeth N. Ikedilo refuted her argument as to why she wanted to become a reverend sister, given the reason that Uzo was her first child/daughter and wanted to see her grand-children. Uzo being an obedient child listened to her mother and agreed to the change of school to Women Training College (WTC), Umuahia from where she secured her grade two teachers certificate. Uzo being a shining star and a born leader did not just pass through her schools without being noticed and given one post or the other. At the W.T.C, School, as a result of her academic excellence, she was made the Mother-General, what is presently known as Senior Prefect in contemporary secondary schools. As the Mother-General, she encouraged students to engage in sports. Uzo was enthusiastic about sports especially Volley Ball thereby introducing Volley Ball to the school and because she was very good at it, she became the team leader who took her team to competitions against other schools and always returned with the cup. She instilled so much discipline in school that her school daughter, then Miss Comfort Kammelu (Now Mrs. Comfort Ezeudu) was handed the baton of being the next Mother-General immediately after Uzo graduated, as it was believed that she must have imbibed all the qualities attributed to Uzo being the closest to her. Uzo began her teaching career in 1958 at the C.M.S. Central School, Oba.in Idemili Local Government Area, Anambra State, where she taught for one year as a pupil teacher. After completing her teachers training course at the W.T.C. Umuahia in 1962, she was posted to Onitsha Girls’ Primary School, Onitsha. It was in the course of teaching, that she met her late husband, Ikem Christopher Agbanusi and they began their courtship. This courtship lasted until Ikem left the shores of Nigeria to the Blackburn College of Technology, Lancashire, England to further his education. He graduated and came back to meet his loyal, pretty, adorable, trust- worthy fiancée – Uzo, waiting for him despite the numerous suitors who came for her hand in marriage while he was far away in the United Kingdom. Uzo moved on from Onitsha Girls’ primary school to teach at Emmanuel church school, Onitsha and so many other schools in Onitsha, Enugu, Asaba, Kano and Lagos. While as a young teacher, Uzo was also known as Liz as a shortening for her first name Elizabeth, she was fondly called Liz and Lizzy because of the spring in her steps when she walked and lady-like composure at all times which drew the attention of many to her. Uzo was an addicted dancer and never boarded last on any dance floor. She loved and enjoyed dancing. On the 27th of May, 1967 being Uzo’s birthday, she got wedded to her long time heartthrob – Ikem C. Agbanusi at the All Saints Church, GRA, Enugu. This God ordained union is blessed with six beautiful daughters and thirteen grand-children as at date. In her quest for more knowledge, she went back to school after bearing four children as at that time to further her education and upgrade her educational status. She gained admission into the then prestigious University of Ile-Ife, Ife, Nigeria where she obtained a degree in Education and majored in English. After her graduation from the University of Ife, she continued with teaching which she really had fervor for; now with a higher qualification she moved on to teach in secondary schools such as the Metropolitan College, Isolo, Lagos State, just to mention a few and was promoted by the Lagos State government to head and revive a school; Gbeleyi primary school, Lagos, which was already in shambles. Mrs. Elizabeth Uzoma Agbanusi came into the school and turned the school around to a better place and more conducive environment for learning. Her enthusiasm for hard work, discipline, cleanliness, morality to be instilled in both teachers and students could not be overlooked. She was honored and received so many awards and promotion as to this regard. One of which was an appointment for the position of Administrator at the School Management Board, Lagos State shortly before her early voluntary retirement. She had her early voluntary retirement though not tired on 30th April, 1989 at the young age of 48 after putting in 31 years in service. This was to enable her nurture her children and cater for her home. After many years of retirement and her children were in the universities but for the last two who were in the secondary school boarding houses, she was still very vibrant and strong. Her husband and she then took a decision for her to gain experience in his field of business and become a distributor of his textile designs. Uzo carried on very well in the business world but the obligation of grand-motherhood, came calling as her daughters began to get married. Uzo’s children were priority for her before anything else in this world. Uzo, due to her philanthropic gesture, became a member of the Inner wheels Club, Ikeja, the women wing of the Rotary Club in the 80's and her immense contribution both financially and otherwise were felt while she was still present. She belonged to associations and organisations, too numerous to mention, where she was either the; President, Vice-President, Matron or Secretary. She never shied away from responsibilities. Wherever she went, whatever she was part of, she was a shining light. She was never found in the background. This only speaks of her leadership qualities. In the Anglican Communion, Uzo was very committed and was made a lay reader at the Saint Paul’s Anglican Church, Ishaga-tedo, Isolo, Lagos State. She became a member of the Christian Pentecostal Mission (CPM) church in 1993 and while as a member where she went to worship Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour, her innate leadership personality could not be hidden. Destiny club was birthed by Pastor (Mrs.) Patience Daniels in 1996 and at this time an ideal person was sought to start off the club. Mummy Agbanusi as she was fondly called by members of the church was found and she was made the Chairman of the Destiny club which was a charity organization to cater for the orphans in the orphanage. She carried out her duties and responsibilities with all humility and great joy in her heart. Uzo in her usual meticulous way inspired the church and the women especially, to discipline and taught them quite a lot which she will not be forgotten for. She moved on by the leading of the Holy Spirit to International Christian Life Outreach Ministry (a.k.a.The Wealthy Place), where she made an ineffaceable mark until her transition unto eternal glory. Mummy Agbanusi joined the friends of Jesus Department in the wealthy place in 2004 and due to her dedication and immense contribution to the growth of the department in church, she was made the matron of the department. Mummy Agbanusi was ordained an elder on the 26th of January, 2006 by Reverend Dan. C. Daniels the founder of International Christian life Outreach Ministry (a.k.a. The Wealthy Place). Her humility and service to God cannot be over emphasized as she glowed in the glory of God and lived a life full of faith in God and did not cease from serving Him in spirit and in truth. She was given a certificate of award for her service to ministry and course of Christ on the 22nd of June, 2008. . Uzo, Elizabeth, Liz, Lizzy, Chief Mrs, Jackel nwa-agbala, Ogoli di mma, Ojiazu eme-uli, Mummy Agbanusi, Elder (Mrs.) Elizabeth Uzo Agbanusi will be greatly missed and remembered for her kindness, peace loving, cheerfulness, great sense of humour, youthfulness, motivation, discipline, hardwork, love towards mankind and above all love for our Lord Jesus Christ.
